{whenever I see an ugly house...}

We are in the process of finding our next home, which is both exciting and scary at the same time.

Part of me really wants a move-in ready house.

But a bigger part of me really wants a fixer upper.  It sounds way more exciting and intriguing getting to transform something from nothing.  We can make it exactly how we like it, which Lord knows I will do anyways.  I can't turn my brain off.

However, whenever I think of my favorite "flipped" house, I think of Darby from Fly Through Our Window.

Talk about a transformation....I love how she kept it a very realistic remodel.  You can read more about it here. She re-purposed her old cabinets and kept the layout pretty much entirely the same.  But it totally looks like a whole NEW kitchen...talk about the power of PAINT!

BEFORE::

AFTER!!!

Now if that dramatic transformation doesn't make you want a fixer-upper than I don't know what does!
Excuse me while I'm off to peruse realtor.com for the zillionth time.  :)

{taste the rainbow...}

Starting my Monday off with some colorful inspiration!

Colorful kitchen

Gorgeous rainbow chair from Roche Bobois.

Love the stripes - could be great to hide washer & dryer? #laundryroom #stripes #colorful #skirted #country #paneling

Hope y'all enjoy your Monday-- we have someone from the moving company coming to look at all our stuff.  Hope she doesn't judge our jam-packed storage room too much! It's floor to ceiling with boxes...scary!!! :)

{eclectic bathroom & persian rugs }

There is just something about eclectic rooms that draw me into them....I love studying all the little details. I simply can't not look at this bathroom below without smiling.  It's just such a happy space!

 The pink & red stripes feel very preppy, kate spade-ish. The vanity& bead board is cottage country.  The velvet chair feels retro-thrift. The rug feels very ethnic-chic.

 Such a unexpected collection-- but it all compliments it other perfectly in my opinion.  Such a fun & unique space!

 My favorite behind the stripe-y walls is the Persian accent rug. It just completes the space.

If y'all are in the market for a beautiful persian rug, check out esalerugs.com  They have the most gorgeous collection of Hamedan Hand Knotted rugs at reasonable prices.

{summer recipes}

With summer right on the horizon (hopefully!) I have been seeking good spring/summer recipes.  I'm one of those weird people that crave yummy salads year round.  I could eat a salad for breakfast,lunch,and dinner. It's redic...and being married to a meat-loving cattle buyer, doesn't make life easy for a salad lover like me.  But these recipes work great for quick and easy lunches, and they keep great in the fridge (and keep getting better as the they marinade longer...).  They are a little different than your normal "lettuce" salad, although I think they would be great with a side of greens. You could serve either of these with Grilled Chicken or Steak too which would be great if you need some extra protein

Here are a few of my recent favorites that were too yummy not to share::

Recipe from Hanging with the Hewitts blog::

  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano, or 1 teaspoon dried
  • Freshly ground pepper to taste
  • 4 cups peeled and diced cucumbers
  • 1 14-ounce can black-eyed peas, rinsed
  • 2/3 cup diced red bell pepper
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup slivered red onion (I only use about an 1/8 of onion...I found 1/4 to be too much!)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped black olives
  • ( I used fresh avocado instead of olives)

.....................................................................................................

Orzo Salad with Feta, Mint and Green Onions (serves 8-10)
1 pound orzo
3 red bell peppers, cut into 1/2 inch dice
3 yellow bell peppers, cut into 1/2 inch dice (I use orange peppers as well...more color!)
4 garlic cloves, minced. (I use a tablespoon of minced garlic...this stuff makes my hectic life a tad easier. It's the small things.)
1/2 cup olive oil (divided)
Salt and freshly ground pepper
5 green onions, minced
12 ounces feta cheese, crumbled
1/2 cup (lightly packed) fresh mint leaves, chopped
1/3 cup pine nuts, lightly toasted
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

................................................................................................

Lastly- since giving up my diet soda addiction last summer, I have been drinking so much more iced tea! This recipe is great if you need something a little sweeter.  I brew a big pitcher of passion fruit tea (love drinking this plain too!) and keep a jug of lemonade and a little bit of simple syrup on hand.  I know it's not "sugar free" but it's so refreshing on a warm day.  And dare I say, better and cheaper than the actual starbucks version!  I use my re-useable starbucks cup too, which makes it more convenient and green!

Copycat Recipe: Starbucks Iced Passion Tea Lemonade

  • Lemonade
  • Tazo Iced Passion Tea
  • 1 Cup Sugar (for simple syrup)
Instructions
  1. Brew 1 quart of water in a Dutch Oven over high heat until boiling. Add one bag of Iced Passion Tea and remove from heat.
  2. Let brew for about 5 minutes. Remove tea bag and let the tea cool.
  3. Add 1⅓ cup of lemonade
  4. Add ⅓ cup simple syrup* (use about half of this to reduce sugar...)
  5. Serve over ice. At Starbucks they shake the heck out of it in a shaker. You can do the same if you have a plastic Starbucks reusable cup. Just pull the straw out and put your finger over the hole
  6. To make the simple syrup: Add one cup of sugar to one cup of water in a saucepan over medium high heat. Stir until all the sugar dissolves. Reduce heat and let simmer about 10 minutes. Add to jar and let cool.

{growing older!}

Best. Idea. EVER.

Cute

Sweet.

It's my birthday today! For some reason, every year around my birthday I get really sappy.  I can't help but reflect on the previous year...the good, bad, happy, and sad.

This past year has been such a growing year for me personally.  I have realized, my strength comes from within.  Do the hard stuff, you never know what your capable of until you confront the stuff that looks impossible or scary.  The number one key to happiness is being grateful...count your blessings. I've realized first hand "stuff" doesn't make you happy (half our belongings are still in storage....), but people make you happy.  I've lived without things I thought I could never have survived without.  I've made some new friends, and lost touch with some old friends.  I've learned you have to stay true to yourself.  Choose your family over anything else. Don't put too much on your plate.  Leave time for the fun stuff in life.  The worst thing, is not the last thing. You will never regret spending time with your parents or grandparents. I've realized being back home, how much this town shaped me into the woman I am today.  At the day's end, most ordinary days this past year felt like such a big accomplishment, and that's okay.  Most of all I have grown so much closer to my husband and son over the course of the last year.  Absolutely 110% of my joy in life comes from them.

 Thanks for all of those who have supported & encouraged me this past year-- one of the greatest compliments I have ever received was from a friend a couple weeks ago , complimenting me (and Mr. Cattlebuyer) on our strength as a husband and wife.  Hands down, Best compliment of the year.  I can't wait for all God has in store for us this next year.  I have a feeling it's going to be our best year yet!

{rules are made to be broken}

Scale is one of the first design principles a ID student learns in college.

Usually...you want things to all be proportionate in interiors.  Everything should be to scale to the objects around it.

However, sometimes rules are made to be broken....notice how small the artwork is above these beds.  It's totally unexpected, but yet it totally works. I'm digging it.

So what do y'all think, less is more, no?

{our weekend recap!}

Hope y'all had an awesome weekend!

We kicked off wedding season 2013 with our good friend's wedding on Saturday Night!
I love weddings...thanks to my MIL for the family picture!

I also made up some of Barefoot Contessa's Raspberry Crumble Bars, mine weren't quite as pretty as Tessa's but they sure were yummy! I substituted strawberry jam instead of raspberry. These bars go great with coffee...yum yum!

NINE + SIXTEEN: Recipe | Barefoot Contessa Raspberry Crumble Bars

Raspberry Crumble Bars

Ingredients
1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2-1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
10 to 12 ounces good raspberry jam
2/3 cup good granola

1/4 cup sliced almonds
Confectioners' sugar, for sprinkling

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Place the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and mix on medium speed just until combined. With the mixer on low, add the vanilla.

Sift the flour and salt together and, with the mixer on low, slowly add to the butter mixture, mixing until it almost comes together in a ball. Turn the dough out on a board. Lightly pat two-thirds of the dough evenly on the bottom of a 9-inch square baking pan and about 1/4-inch up the sides. Spread with the jam, leaving a 1/4-inch border. Mix the granola into the remaining dough with your hands. Break the dough into small bits and distribute it on top of the jam, covering most of the surface. Sprinkle the almonds on top. Bake the bars for 45 minutes, until lightly browned.

Cool completely and cut into 9 or 12 bars. Sprinkle lightly with confectioners' sugar.

I've also been spending a ridiculous amount of time scouring realtor.com, still searching for our dream house....I'm learning rather quickly that said house may not exist! :)
Hopeful we will find something soon!

{the foundary}

If y'all are suckers for uniquely, one-of-a-kind abstract artwork please check out Cody Brown's Abstract Artwork on Foundary.com.  They are not surprisingly already sold out of many of his pieces (they are gorge!), but there are some beauties left for those of us still arriving late to the party!
 I met Cody at some point in college, and have followed his inspiring journey as an artist ever since!

This is what the foundary has to say about him::

Cody Brown finds beauty in chaos. Beyond splashes of color, there are delicate patterns and clashing textures. Each canvas is hand stretched over a handcrafted pine frame.

{boxwood & black}

I love checking out joss & main sales whenever I have a free moment.

Their Boxwood and Black curated sale going on now, is absolutely fabulous.  Two design elements I always add to any space:: touches of black accents & greenery. Vital parts of most well designed spaces in my opinion. Neither go out of style. ever.

Here are some of my favorites::

{weekend faves}

Happy Saturday!!

Just keeping things nice and random today.

you know i do random well...

First up, I finally re-did my e-design services page.  Please check it out!!! I am no graphic designer...but thanks to design school I know how to maneuver my way around Photoshop pretty well.  I'm hoping these new graphics & descriptions help my clients get a better feel for how e-design works and the variety of services I am able to offer.  Still tweeking things here and there, so be prepared for more changes in the future! Y'all know I'm fickle when it comes to this graphic design stuff!

............................................................................................

I'm totally inspired by the colors in this gorgeous bouquet::
mint, pink, peach,sitting pretty in that aqua jar =  yum!

...................................................................................................................

I saw this shirt below on an instagram feed I follow and instantly fell in love with it's kate spade inspired, red and pink stripes! What do y'all think? Is it too late in the year to be buying long sleeve blouses?  Take my word for it, it looks cuter untucked, unbuttoned a little at the top, with skinny jeans & gold jewelry-- I don't think this photo does it justice.

Jello Poke Cake::

My sister made this last week for my dad's birthday, and I've been CRAVING it ever since!! How have I never had this recipe in my life before?  I know I'm crazy, but my sweet tooth run-ith wild!

But it really is the most perfect Spring/Summer Dessert! Requesting this for my birthday in a few weeks!

..............................................................................................

Last but certainly not least,

I read this wonderful blog post by Sibi at Pearls &Grace Blog, and I must say it really spoke to my heart.  Spend some time on her blog and you will see what I mean very quickly! Sibi has a way with words that just make them stick to your heart....

From Sibi's blog::

You have no idea how powerful your ability to reach others really is. God just needs a willing vessel.

And I'm not talking about just handing out bible tracts, or quoting a scripture or forwarding an email with a nice story. As wonderful as all of that may be at the right time and such.

I'm talking about your reach.

Your ability to connect with another person- heart to heart. Spirit to spirit.

You have no idea the power you have within you to change hearts and lives in the most amazing ways. Just something so small and simple can turn a heart to Him today.

These few sentences have had me thinking ever since, how I can reach others through being a mother, a blogger, a friend, a sister....the list goes on and on.  God has given me this wonderful platforms, I need to start getting better about using them for his glory!

Am I doing enough? Am I taking the time to truly invest and get to know/keep in touch with others? How can I be better at reaching out and showing God's love to those around me?

I want to be his vessel.

Hope y'all have an awesome weekend-- our sunshine is finally back, hooray!!

{mother nature & floral}

Just when we all thought spring was here, Mother Nature likes to remind us differently! I think I actually even made the comment on Monday that it was actually "hot" outside.

pssshhhh...I should have known better! :)

Now we have our winter coats back out in rotation again.

boohoo.

I suppose if we can't enjoy the spring flowers outside, we will have to find delight in these floral rugs via Anthropologie.  Anthro is one of my favorite sources for bright, unexpected, colorful rugs! Statement rugs make a perfect centerpiece for an entire room.

Hoping our beautiful Spring weather comes back soon.  I'm not sure how much more of this cold stuff I can handle...
